Submission journey

The first thing to do is read the guidance properly. We want the cleanest possible input for OCR. A scanner is the preferred route. Only if you do not have access to a scanner should you continue with photo-based options.

Please try your best to use a scanner

A scanner is the best option because it usually produces a straight, clear document with fewer lighting problems and fewer OCR problems. That gives us the best chance of reading the writing correctly. If you cannot get access to a scanner at all, we do accept clear, high-quality pictures as well — but only after you confirm that no scanner is available.

We expect at least 11 page(s) for each submission. If you upload fewer pages than expected, the system will warn you so that you can check before you continue.

Scanner route

This is the option we want wherever possible, because it gives the best OCR quality.

  1. Put the full script in the correct page order.
  2. Scan all pages into one PDF if you can.
  3. If the paper is double-sided, scan both sides of every page.
  4. Open the PDF before uploading and check that every page is readable.
  5. Make sure pages are not blurry, cut off, upside down, or too dark.
